Support for Students and Schools
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) confirmed that students certified for free meals through SNAP or TANF will continue to receive free breakfast and lunch for the entire school year despite the shutdown — benefitting roughly 39,000 students statewide. Families newly applying for SNAP or experiencing income loss are encouraged to apply for subsidized student meals to ensure no child goes hungry.
HIDOE is also encouraging families who have experienced a change in income due to furloughs or job losses from the federal government shutdown to apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits for the current school year.
Application and program details are available at https://go.hidoe.us/FRPM.
(Note: Federal employees who have been furloughed or are not receiving pay should input ‘0’ for income).
